RECIPE FOR DUCK SOUP:
Whether it be a black-tie affair or a very casual event, this recipe will serve an unlimited number of guests.

  • 1 Plump Bald Guy
  • 1 Lg. Bunch of Talented Musicians, Finely Tuned
  • 3 Cups 60's rock-n-Roll Hits
  • 1 Cup 50's Classic Rock
  • 2 Tbsp. 70's Groove
  • 1 Dash 60's Funk
  • Simmer for Hours of Fun and Laughter
Sports Illustrated
"Anybody on the Tour who wants to live his rock-and-roll dream will always be embraced by Duck Soup. The Austin-based, eight-piece ensemble - which proudly calls itself the unofficial band of the PGA Tour - entertains at a dozen regular Tour, Senior Tour, Nike Tour and LPGA events a year and recently cut an album titled Dead Solid Perfect, on which several Tour players, not to mention golf fanatic Willie Nelson, sang. In live performances Duck Soup provides a regular haven for frustrated singers Peter Jacobsen, Andrew Magee and Fuzzy Zoeller, guitarists Mark Lye and Larry Rinker, mouth harpist Payne Stewart and cowbell junkie Robert Gamez."

The Washington Post
"The Armey's did a quick twirl to "Brown-Eyed Girl," but the Gingriches stayed on the floor for song after song -- including a version of the Village People's "YMCA, "complete with arm movements spelling out the letters."

USA Today
"On Saturday night... Robert (That's Bob to you) Seger wed Juanita Dorricoft... Duck Soup, a band imported from Austin, Texas, provided rock and R&B classics ... and displaying impressive chutzpah by cranking out Seger's own "Old Time Rock 'n' Roll." The Houston Chronicle "Irwin has an expressive face, which he constantly contorts on stage. He is not averse to scratching his body like a monkey. He will make you laugh." Golf World "the Birds' Nest menu: Duck Soup and plenty of partying fans. Today, it's a happening. Ask 100,000 people who is leading the tournament and half of them wouldn't know. It's like the Woodstock of the PGA Tour."

The Phoenix Gazzette
"The Nest was not able to explode onto the Valley social scene until 1987, when two things happened ... Thunderbird Steve Butterfield found an eight-piece band named Duck Soup in Austin, Texas, and brought it west. It's just possible that the hottest night spot in the Valley [The Birds Nest] ... features Duck Soup on the bandstand instead of on the menu."

The Houston Chronicle
"Golf and music lovers know them as the "unofficial band of the PGA Tour." In fact, Austin's own Duck Soup has perfomed at a number of tour events... So it should come as no surprise that the long awaited debut album by the group features vocals by some of the leading golfers on the PGA Tour, as well as country icon Willie Nelson."

The Austin-American Statesman
"Talk About A Hot Band' Duck Soup played recently at the Michigan wedding of rock'n'roll star Bob Seger... [and] has played at so many Professional Golf Association tournaments that it's known in golfing circles as the "unofficial" band of the PGA Tour, we hear."

The Dispatch
"With red cheeks and warm jackets, the crowd packed the dance floor and let loose to the music of Duck Soup, the unofficial band of the PGA tournament since 1984."

Meet the Band

  Jim Trimmier - bari sax
Jim was born and grew up in the Oak Cliff area in Dallas, Texas and in the sixties he decided to become a professional musician. In high school he was fortunate enough to meet a younger Stevie Vaughan and played in bands with him in the seventies: Liberation 1970, the Nightcrawlers 1973, and Paul Ray and the Cobras 1976. He called both Austin and Corpus Christi home during the seventies, playing in the bands Crawdaddy, Lee Williams and the Ninth Wonder, and Moment's Notice. Jim lived as a nomad from 1976 to 1984, on the road with the show band Flyer, alongside alter egos Frankie Cashmere and the Sweaters.

He moved off the road and turned to study in 1984, attending Del Mar College and CCSU and receiving a B.M. in Jazz Studies from North Texas in 1991.

Michael Hoffer - horn section
Michael was born in San Antonio, moving to Austin in 1994 to obtain his BA of Music from UT.  When not singing or playing the trombone, or various other instruments, Mike is arranging, composing and dabbling in independent film production.  He also does "body double" work for Vince Vaughn whenever in LA-LA Land and plays some of the best solos on the face of the earth.  His smile is infectious and his charm disarming, he is the epitome of Duck Soup.

Scott Benner - sax
Scott began playing piano at age 5 and picked up the saxophone at age 10.  He excelled in band at school and went on to get a Degree in Music from the University of  North Texas.  After touring Europe twice with jazz bands and playing with the Temptations, Fats Domino, Bill Withers, etc....., he landed in Las Vegas.  After 15 years of Casino gigs on the "Strip", and losing the equivalent of 5 new cars to the machines and tables, he decided to come back home to Texas and play with Duck Soup.

Kevin Conway - drummer
Kevin was originally from Long Island, NY moved to San Antonio, TX as a teenager.  Started playing drums and piano at 12.  Came to Austin to attend the University of Texas and never left.  Has been with Duck Soup for 15 years and can't remember much before that.  His main goal in life before music was to become a refrigerator magnate.

John Brandesky - keyboards & vocals
First instrument, Kleenex box with rubber bands.  Could not play Beatles songs that way.  Studied piano, and in the mean time self-taught guitar.  Attented Goldsmith College in London U.K.  performing and studying 20'th century music.  Won piano competition and scholarship to Trinity University.  Throughout the 80's and 90's, travelled the U.S., Canada and beyond.  Brushes with fame on a piano bench:  Willie Nelson to the left and Frankie Avalon to the  right.

Rick Barden - vocals & keyboards
* Native Austinite
* BA Degree from UT at Austin (English Lit. Major)
* Working musician since a teenager
* Always a singer, also plays keyboards and guitar
* Lived and worked in San Francisco in the late '70's during the
heyday of New Wave and Punk Rock in the bands Perfect Strangers and the Neutrinoz * A lifelong songwriter, signed to a publishing contract in the 80's with legendary hit maker Barry Mann and his then-partner and Sam's life-long friend Steve Tyrell and had songs featured in movies and network television
* In the 80's and 90's, played with several popular bands around Austin.
* Moved up to the big leagues, joining Duck Soup in 2002

Career Highlights:
Working with Sandra Bullock
Opening for Sheena Easton
Being introduced by Dick Clark
Being told to "tighten up on that organ" by Archie Bell

Daryl Buckner - guitar
Daryl was the guitarist with Anita Mann's musical "A Blast from the Past" performing with Leslie Gore, The Shirelles, Mary Wells, and Freda Payne.  While living in Las Vegas, he worked with Carleen Terano, Stolen Faces, Area Code 402, and Roby Turner.  He was also the original cast member of Country Tonight, performed on their two CD releases and won the CMAA award for best live Band for two consecutive years.  He has toured the U.S., Europe, Japan, and South America with Tammi Graham and as a member of Duck Soup, has performed with Alice Cooper, Glen Campbell, Vince Gill, Darius Rucker of Hootie and the Blowfish.

Kyle Brock - bass guitar
Kyle came from Abilene, TX to attend Southwest Texas State and then St. Edwards University.

Toured and wrote music for Eric Johnson Group from 1987 until 1995 when he joined Duck Soup.

If Kevin, the drummer, is the heart of the band, then Kyle is the soul. He inspires!
